Here in the heartland of the United States of America we are known for our strong work ethic, devotion to family and love for the beauty nature has provided. The Heartland Welsh Association is an extension of these qualities.

Heartland Welsh Association was formed in January 2004. It was built on the dreams of Lisa Brezina, Tori Laub and Mary Carter who searched long and hard for a Welsh Pony and Cob club in their area, but to no avail. The closest clubs to their Indiana homes were Heart of Minnesota, Welsh of Wisconsin and Ohio Welsh. All of these clubs were too far away, so they decided to see if there were any more Welsh Enthusiasts located in their area.

Lisa and Mary proceeded to mail hundreds of postcards to members of the Welsh Pony and Cob Society of America who lived in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky. The response to this mailing was very positive. Joining the club were experienced breeders and competitors like Martha Stover and Daryn Johnson, as well as people who were relatively new to the Welsh breed like Tammy Friedrich and Jen Sommer.

We set our goals for that first year rather high. Right away we aimed our sights on hosting a WPCSA, double gold show. Although most clubs have 12 months to plan a show, we only had 6 months. With the enthusiasm and commitment of our membership, we were willing to press forward towards this show. In fact, we did host a show the weekend of July 17th and 18th and it was a great success. Although we did not get enought ponies at our show to make it to the Gold sanctioning we had hoped for, we all still had a wonderful time.

In 2005, we had a wonderful year. Our members brough ponies and cobs from all over the mid-west to participate in the Hoosier Horse Fair, a horse and pony expo located in Indianapolis. We brought a representative pony from each of the four Welsh section to participate in the breed demonstrations. We also hosted another WPCSA sanctioned show, and this time we made Gold!

In 2006, we continued our forward momentum by hosting our annual show, this time it was the last weekend in July. Our show added several more classes including Hunter classes for all sections. We also added more in-hand classes for the half-Welsh to separate the boys from the girls. More information about our show can be found on the "Show Information" link above.

In the years since we have hosted 4 more successful gold shows and added 2 Bronze shows per year to our repertoire.  We are constantly looking for ways to improve and grow!

So, if you are enthusiastic about Welsh Ponies and Cobs, if you would like to find venues where you can showcase your Welsh, or if you just want to spend time with a bunch of people who are crazy about their Welsh, come join Heartland Welsh Association.
